When deathcore started gaining popularity in the 2000s you either loved or hated it. Most people hated it and with good reason but for the amount of bad bands that were a part of the genre, there’s a good crop of heavy hitters that didn’t get the recognition they deserved. One of those bands is Long Islands Own Without Remorse. A band that embodies everything that is Deathcore from the fast death metal sections to the thugged-out hardcore breakdowns.
Started in 2003 by long-time friends Chris McCarthy and Matt Martens, the band would go on to write an album that would be the antithesis to what was popular in extreme music at the time. Other bands at the time just missed the mark whereas Without Remorse presented their ability to write fast in-your-face Death Metal with grooving hardcore elements and a touch of New York hip hop thuggery. Every track on this album is a sonic assault on the senses and is like the audible version of a Mortal Kombat fatality. From the thugged-out opening track "Our Ascent to the Throne" to the death metal assault that is "American Disgrace" this band meant business.
When I think of Deathcore this is the album and band that comes to mind. No eight-string guitars, no keyboards, no clean interludes just unrelenting brutal thugged-out Death metal with Hardcore influences. This album doesn’t get the recognition it deserves even when it pioneered a sound within the genre better than any other band at that time. Even in 2024 this album smokes half the “hard” bands coming up today and hopefully we’ll get some new music soon.
